Evaluation of the air disinfection potential of the AIRsteril device

The objective of the experiments was to determine the efficacy of the device in terms of its ability to reduce the concentration of viable microorganisms in the air in a one cubic metre test enclosure.

The objective of the experiments was to determine the efficacy of the device in terms of its ability to reduce the concentration of viable microorganisms on stainless steel surfaces.

Efficacy testing of the Airsteril MP20 air purification device to reduce aerosol and surface microbial contamination

Two studies were carried out with the Airsteril MP20 Air Purification Device to evaluate if it could reduce both aerosol and surface microbial contamination.

1. The aerosol study involved challenging the Airsteril MP20 Air Purification Device separately with MS-2 coliphage NCIMB 10108 (an unenveloped single stranded RNA coliphage) and Staphylococcus epidermidis NCIMB 12721 (a Gram positive cocci)

2. The surface decontamination study involved exposing stainless steel discs contaminated with know concentrations of MS-2 coliphage NCIMB 10108 and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus NCIMB 13162 (MRSA) (Gram positive cocci)

Air Steril, Rhinovirus and MRSA

Viruses, Bacteria and Moulds are easily eliminated from exterior air and surfaces by nature, Air Steril units re-create
these natural processes in an interior environment destroying the same pathogens.

All laboratory tests were conducted at the Health Protection Agency (HPA) ‘Centre for Emergency Preparedness
and Response’ in the bio-safety laboratories.

Airborne testing at the HPA demonstrated 98.11% bacteria reduction and 92.17% reduction in the standard viral
surrogate* after only 5 minutes. Many products in the field of airborne pathogen control have been tested over an
hour but this produces unrealistic results with a standard size test chamber.

Surface testing at the HPA demonstrated 59.47% contamination reduction after an hour. Products attempting to
treat surface pathogens have been tested over a 24 hour period, but it was calculated within an hour thecleaning
air produced by the unit has reached the same levels as in a normal operating environment.

Endoscopy Disinfection Unit

In the Endoscopy Disinfection units at Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, a problem with air quality has persisted.

As the AER (Automatic Endoscopy Reprocessor) doors opened and closed throughout the day, peracetic acid (used as disinfectant for the endoscopes) vapour levels increased cumulatively within the unit.

This caused some discomfort for AER operators. Peracetic acid vapour can be irritating to the eyes, mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, and skin in humans after exposure to concentrations as low as 15.6 mg peracetic acid/m3 (5 parts per million) for only 3 min.

Brief summary of data supplied by East Of England Ambulance service regarding absenteeism in their call centre before and after installation of Airsteril Multiflex units.

AIRsteril units were installed at the end of September 2018, the below shows absenteeism data month by month from the previous calendar year with any differences recorded. We have requested additional data on the type of illness, specifically respiratory conditions, and definitions of long term/short term, but as shown there is a clear drop in absenteeism with AIRsteril.

Total Sick % Oct-17 to Feb-18 has an average of 12.85% and Oct-18 to Feb-19 has an average of 5.91%, so a reduction of 54% in total sickness.
